Important results from the project
The project mapped technical, chemical and regulatory barriers to recycling cable plastics. Sorting, combustion, extrusion and quality tests generated knowledge on material identification, sample preparation and quality assurance. The project identified a need for common labeling, improved traceability and test methods. A Plastics Pledge for non-toxic and circular cable material flows was developed, outlining ambitions regarding recycled plastics, traceability, documentation, and classification.
Expected long term effects
The results may enable increased recycling of cable plastics, reduced use of virgin plastics and lower climate impact. Common labelling, documentation and quality assurance can improve access to traceable and chemically safe recycled feedstock. The project also provides a basis for continued dialogue with public authorities and the development of common industry specifications.
Approach and implementation
The project was carried out by Novoplast, Trifilon, Hexatronic and Prysmian in dialogue with cable recyclers, industry associations and public authorities. The work included mapping, material collection, analysis and testing. The results were jointly evaluated and formed the basis for recommendations for further technical and regulatory work, as well as a Plastics Pledge reviewed and approved by the project partners.
